Depression

One major side effect of chronic pain is depression. Inwardly everything begins to seem hopeless. Outwardly, things begin to spiral downward: sleeping all day, not bathing, and not taking care of everyday responsibilities. It is a condition that is insidious. It leaves the feeling that there is no way to get better and if left untreated can ruin a persons life, even leading to suicide. However, it is a very treatable condition. The cause is often a chemical imbalance in the brain from prolonged stress. With proper diagnosis and treatment there is no reason why one who suffers from this condition can’t regain a full and happy life. Treatment is essential.

Unfortunately, many (especially men) who have always been independent and self-reliant are hesitant to admit that they are suffering from such a condition. They have the idea that it implies that they are less than adequate. It is an affront to their manhood. But how much less is it an affront to manhood to withdraw and deny what’s going on. If you suspect you are depressed, you probably are. If your family suggests you are depressed, you probably are. Don’t drag it out, GO GET HELP.
